2022 BH DU Research Prizes
As part of our commitment to supporting the next generation of clinical and academic health and medical researchers, we are delighted to announce the winners of the 2022 Barwon Health and Deakin University (BH DU) Research Prizes.
The Best Paper of the Year Award recognises a paper of outstanding quality by a Barwon Health or Deakin University scientist or clinician researcher, accepted or published during 2021 and 2022.
The Best Research Poster Awards recognise the most outstanding research communicated via poster format conducted by Barwon Health or Deakin University researchers in six key research areas.

- Clinician Researcher winner - Professor Eugene Athan: Environmental risk factors associated with the presence of Mycobacterium ulcerans in Victoria, Australia
- Scientist winner - Ms Yuan Gao: Maternal gut microbiota during pregnancy and the composition of immune cells in infancy

- Medical - Dr Christine Roder: “Pregnancy -a key moment for engaging women with hepatitis B in care”
- Nursing - Mr Nathan Herbert: “Impact of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on a Victorian regional ST-elevation myocardial infarction service”
- Population Health - Dr Naomi Clarke: “COVID-19 oral antiviral medication in South West Victoria: patterns, barriers, and use of targeted SMS messaging”
- Surgery - Dr John Kefalianos: “Does NELA accurately predict mortality in Australia”
